Counterfeit 500 rupee notes up 121% in 2018-19, says RBI

New Dehi: Counterfeiting of the recently planned ₹500 notes shot up by 121 percent and of the ₹2,000 notes by 21.9 percent in 2018-19 in contrast with the earlier year, the RBI said on Thursday. Of the ₹200 group note, which was presented in August 2017, upwards of 12,728 fake notes were identified as against 79 during the earlier year, the RBI said. 

Further, the RBI distinguished an expansion of 20.2 percent, 87.2 percent and 57.3 percent in fake notes identified in the categories of ₹10, ₹20 and ₹50, separately, yet fake notes recognized in the category of ₹100 declined by 7.5 percent. 

Out of the absolute Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICNs) recognized in 2018-19 in the financial area, 5.6 percent were identified at the RBI and 94.4 percent by different banks, the RBI said. 

The all out use acquired on security printing, the RBI stated, from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019 remained at ₹48.11 billion as against ₹49.12 billion in the earlier year.
